Robinson R44 Raven II
Universal Helicopters utilizes Robinson R44 Raven I & II helicopters for commercial, instrument and flight instructor training of which Robinson has to date produced over 5000. The R44 Raven is an outstanding four seat, 130 mph, 12-18 gallons per hour, hydraulic power controls helicopter, delivering the performance of a much more expensive turbine helicopter. We use IFR certified Garmin 430W’s for GPS Departure, En Route and Instrument Approach Procedures. These receivers are equipped with WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) enabling us to teach GPS Instrument Approach Procedures with Vertical Navigation (APV). The R44 is a fast and comfortable cross country helicopter powered by the reliable Lycoming O or IO 540 6 cylinder engine.
UHI’s helicopters are immaculately maintained, well equipped and kept in first class condition. All our helicopters have dual communication radios, Garmin GPS Satellite Receivers and are painted in the unique Universal Helicopters blue, yellow and white colors. We operate a fleet of 18 R44’s of which all but 2 are configured as Instrument Trainers. We carry out our own maintenance locally at each school location and all overhauls are carried out at our Camarillo overhaul facility.”
We are part way through the process of converting the Instrument Trainers from conventional flight instruments to Garmin G500H Glass cockpits with “ADS-B Out and In” capability. Three R44’s are also equipped for Night Vision Goggle work.
